DISEASE INFORMATION GUIDE
The Flu is a highly contagious, respiratory disease, generally caused by the Influenza A or Influenza B virus. While both viruses will give you flu symptoms ( chills, fever, cough, sore muscles), Infuenza A is known to mutate at rapid rates. The rapid mutation Influenza A is responsible for Avian and Swine Flu. Though the flu is common, especially during winter months, it is responsable for thousands of American Deaths evey year, usually in young children.
Method Of Transmission
The flu is spread through respiratory droplets, expelled though coughs and sneezes. The flu virus can travel directly through the air and into another persons respiratory tract, or is can linger on surfaces. Complications
While most people with the flu are better in a couple of weeks, some suffer serious complications. People over 50 and children between 6 months and 2 years are at especially high risk for complications. People with chronic lung, heart, or kidney conditions, and those with diabetes or a weakened immune system are also at high risk. Pregnant women are also at high risk for Flu complications.
Treatment
Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are generally used to treat Fever symptoms. Acetaminophen is taken every 4-6 hours, and ibuprofen every 6-8 hours. Aspirin should not be taken. Bed rest, Liquids, and abstinence from alcohol and tobacco are also recommended. Serious complications include Pneumonia, Encephalitis, Bronchitis, Sinus and Ear Infections.
