DISEASE INFORMATION GUIDEMUMPSThe mumps is a contagious disease that leads to a painful swelling of the salivary glands. The mumps is a virus that most commonly occurs in children ages 2-12.Method of TransmissionThe mumps is spread person-to-person and via airborne means. The coughs and sneezes of a person infected with the mumps will spread the mumps virus through the air. Respiratory droplets spread through the air can also land on surfaces and objects, contaminating them, and enabling said surfaces to spread the disease. Signs and Symptoms -Face pain ComplicationsIf left untreated, the mumps can result in causes of Orchitis in males. Orchitis is the swelling and inflammation of one or both testicles. Because the mumps is a virus, mumps-borne Orchitis can not be treated, and has the potential to cause serious damage, including sterility and testicular atrophy. Untreated cases of the mumps can also result in infections of the central nervous system (meningitis) and pancreas. TreatmentAs the mumps is a virus, there is no real treatment. THE ONLY REAL CURE FOR THE MUMPS IS PREVENTION. Those who contract mumps are most commonly treated with ice packs for swollen faces and acetaminophen for pain relief. |
