-NEVER, and I mean NEVER wash grease down the sink! Thick grease can clog up sewer lines worse than even rags and paper towels! When sewage lines get blocked, wastewater flows backwards to the nearest possible outlet.

Even if you have a top of the line garbage disposal, grease should still never be put down the drain. Scrape grease and leftover oil from cooking into a can or the trash for disposal

Check Valve-Make SURE your home has a, “check-valve,” also known as a “backflow preventer.” This device is designed to stop wastewater from municipal sewer lines from backing up into your home. Most new homes are built with these, but many older homes were not!
Some check valves even have clear plastic tops that allow you to see if the valve is intact. It’s recommended to check out your, “check valve,” on an annual basis.

A Properly installed check valve is critical. If you don’t have a check valve and municipal waste backs up into your property, even if it’s the municipalities fault, it will NOT be covered under normal home insurance. If you DO have a check valve, and municipal waste gets in your property because of a check valve failure, it usually is covered under the average homeowner’s insurance policy. Make sure you have a check valve, and make sure it’s functioning properly on an annual basis.

-If a pipe inside your property gets clogged or malfunctions and causes a sewage back up inside your home, most homeowner’s insurance policies will cover it.

-If sewage does back up into your basement, do NOT enter the basement! Sure, most people aren’t eager to wade through blackwater and raw sewage, but even if there is important property in your basement, don’t risk it! It must be assumed all sewage carries infectious bacteria such as hepatitis, E. coli, and over 400 other pathogenic microbes. Furthermore, sewage leaks fill a basement up to anywhere from a few inches, to a few feet! If the wastewater is high enough or leaking in the wrong place, it could create a current running into the wastewater from your fusebox! If you discover a sewage leak in your basement, the first thing you should do it CALL BIO-CLEAN IMMEDEATLY!
